Projects
This is where I'll put information about any personal (for fun) projects I work on, mostly just to help me keep track of what I'm doing.
Glowstick Man
This is a working title for now, I don't really want the title being the name of the protagonist, so I'll change it later. Anyway, "Glowstick Man" (for now) is a screenplay I'm writing. It's about a dysfunctional group of superheroes who are facing a potential alien invasion. Each character has some deep mental issues, and the story is more about character than plot, with the main focus being the characters and their problems, with the plot mainly being there to accentuate this and to kinda peel open the different characters. The group is like if the cast of Evangelion mashed together with the Justice League.
Speaking of characters, here they are:
- Glowstick Man - His superpower is that he glows in the dark (like a glow stick). But, also like a glow stick, he has to break to glow. This means that any physical stress to his body makes him glow, particularly breaking bones, so he's usually in a cast or something (he has no healing factor). He is very introverted, mostly because he's very scared of how others perceive him, so tries to avoid others to avoid this fear. In particular, he's scared that the other members of the team (who have much more impressive superpowers) will view him as weak and useless. Despite this, he's not totally spineless, he's pretty good at helping others with their problems, he just tends to run away from/avoid his own.
- Arc - Arc's powers are all about electricity, he can control and produce it, but can also turn his body into a pure electrical current. His powers have some very useful and creative applications, but he mostly uses it to give the illusion that he has super speed, zipping around as a current. Arc is very flashy and extroverted, and always has to be stimulated, he can't ever just sit still and do nothing. He's also always mocking the other characters (especially Glowstick Man). He's like this because he doesn't like himself very much, so projects onto others and can't sit with his own thoughts, meaning he never self reflects and doesn't really ever change. He's also very competitive, again tying into disliking himself, as he's sort of trying to prove to himself that he's worth something by being the best at everything.
- Sir Planet (also a working name) - He's the leader of the group and the oldest (50s). His powers are basically Superman, he can fly and is very strong/durable. He's always been the strong protector, and, with his age, he's starting to feel like he's not gonna be able to do that for much longer. Feeling his age terrifies him, not only because he won't be the strongest anymore, but also because he might not be able to protect everybody soon (which he puts a lot of his self-worth into). He also doesn't know how to deal with more existential/mental fears like this, he can't punch his way out of it this time. Also, being a man of his generation, he tends to bottle up/hide any mental issues that bother him, meaning it just gets worse and worse.
- Scrapper - Scrapper is a very skilled mechanic/engineer, and her power is that she's basically Magneto but only for rusted metal. She's a chronic perfectionist, but her rust-related powers are inherently messy and imperfect, which bothers her. Her perfectionism also makes her very judgemental, both of herself and others; she still loves and appreciates the people in her life, but this love is sort of peppered with hate because she can't stand how imperfect everybody is (again, this includes herself as well). Everybody else's imperfections sort of remind her of her own, and vice versa. I also want to play around with her having anger problems, also probably stemming from her perfectionism (she's short and impatient with others, because she gets frustrated at their flaws and mistakes?)
- T.H.R.O.A.T. - his name stands for The Hypest Robot Of All Time (he is a robot that was made by a very intelligent child). He is very book-smart intelligent (robot) and has Mr. Fantastic-esque extendable limbs. He's permanently connected to the internet, meaning he has a constant feed of information, which makes him very overstimulated and overwhelmed all the time (he's kind of like a really neurotic Ultron). This makes him a quivering, nervous wreck. He's also very conflict-avoidant and is a people-pleaser, he doesn't set boundaries well and has almost no self-worth (he was created, not born, so believes his purpose is to serve others, so always sacrifices his own needs for others'). I think this character could be more coherent, his two sort of main traits (overstimulated neurotic and conflict-averse people pleaser) don't feel like they gel very well to me.
- Aphid - she's a weird insect-human hybrid. Her dad was/is(?) a scientist who made her into this, as of now I think it was his weird, twisted way of loving her (I want to build his character more). The experiments that made her this way have severely traumatised her, so she lives in a sort of dream world and is constantly detached from the world, sort of using escapism to deal with it. She also has complicated relationships/opinions of men due to her father issues (for a long time he was the only person she really interacted with, let alone the only man she interacted with). Her physical form is a constant reminder of her trauma, hence the escapism/derealisation/disassociation. She also thinks she's horrific and unlovable
